Antigua's Donkey Sanctuary Humane Society opiniones
22 The road to the shelter is a little tricky, especially after rainfall. We decided to walk the last few hundred meters.
As mentionend before, they keep +/- a dozen friendly donkeys in the visitors area. They love being brushed - brushes are provided. If not, they will just walk away, but not bite or kick you. Nevertheless, better do not present your fingers carrot-style - they may take it for a carrot!
Donkeys running free on the island are a problem: they kick away the little soil and cause traffic accidents (and thus get hurt). So it is obviously better for donkeys and island to take them in.
Such a cool place. The road in depending on the route you take can be a bit dicey at times if it has just rained but it’s worth the trip!
Loved the experience. Donkeys are so sweet and friendly. Staff is great. Cannot recommend enough!
Great work being done here by the team. Visitors can interact with a selection of donkeys, brushing them etc.there is a good range of quality gifts and a well stocked second hand bookstore as well. Great fun stopover and a good way to support this small charity. Accessible wheelchair friendly route round the main entrance enclosure.
I visited this sanctuary while on a girls' trip to Antigua. It is nice that such an organization exists to help these donkeys. You can tell the staff here really cares for the donkeys. You are given brushes so you can brush and pet the donkeys. The donkeys were so sweet. Antigua was going through a drought when we visited so the donkeys were thin. They were having to import hay. We got to see the donkeys being fed. They were so excited with the truck with the hay showed up. There is also a gift shop where you can buy items to support the sanctuary. I bought a cute little donkey toy made of yarn. As others have mentioned, the road out to the sanctuary is rough, so take your time driving out there.
Really wonderful place with kind and caring staff and volunteers. A must-see when you're in Antigua! Sweet donkeys you get to brush if you'd like. Also a cat and dog shelter. The road is rough to get there so we asked our driver to include it on our island tour. You can sponsor a donkey as well, in person and on their website. Don't miss this place!
The Humane Society have rescued over 150 donkeys and this sanctuary allows for them to be well fed and properly cared for. An amazing initiative.
We loved visiting the donkey's, dogs and cats. If we are ever back in Antigua we will visit again for sure.
We've been here 4 times, each time bringing different friends. Always a wonderful, albeit generally short visit (15 minutes). There is no admission charge - but upon arrival, you are given brush and asked to brush them. The donkeys are docile and even our young grandchildren helped with the brushing. There is a small gift shop / used book store so you can support their rescue efforts with a little bc money too. Great to visit if you are in the area (for Stingray City or Devil's Bridge).
Great experience, friendly animals, you get a brush to brush (or pet) them when you arrive.
They do an amazing job here. They also have some stray dogs you can adopt. If you see the before and after photos, it's a testament to their expertise.
Have a stroll to interact with the donkeys, and learn about the organization's work. It's a great free activity to do with family or kids if you are vacationing in Antigua. It is easy to find by GPS.
Great place homing abused a d neglected Donkey's. Very sad to see some so scared but they are being looked after now. We could wander freely and brush the donkeys. There is the opportunity to sponsor a donkey and make a donation. Facilities there very clean.
These were the sweetest donkeys! Surprise (that's her name) followed me around and I just adore her!
If you're in Antigua you should find this place. It's a fun and unique stop with a good cause.
It's a little bit off the beaten path but if you follow Google it should get you there pretty easily.
When you arrive they give you a brush and set you to work, find your first donkey and get to brushing. They really do love it (just maybe not when they are eating).
Don't wear sandals it's pretty dusty plus well, you know, poop.
We took our power dog to be micro chipped and registered here. Very professionally done. Nice staff.
Had a lovely time. The donkeys are quite friendly. They will slowly amble on over to you to ask for a brushing. Wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty because there are droppings about. Also go in the morning, theist stretch of road is not paved.
Our 10 year old believes donkeys are his spirit animal. When he saw the signs for the Donkey Sanctuary he got super excited. We visited mid-way through our week’s vacation. He wasn’t disappointed. It is a simple rescue, nothing fancy, but Carol was warm and welcoming. Told us the stories of how the donkeys got to their new home, gave us brushes to groom them, we came close to feeding time so we heard the donkeys braying in excitement. The sanctuary is on 35 acres but the area close to the main entrance had approx. 20 donkeys. Full disclosure - massive amounts of donkey poo everywhere, but shockingly enough, we didn’t smell a thing. Our son left with a t-shirt, a crocheted donkey keychain.and an adopted donkey named Pumpkin, full with adoption certificate!) who Carol said she’ll email updated pics of this summer. The entire experience made our little guys day ️.
Cant feed donkeys cant go in no one would even come out for you. Skip and feed wild donkeys instead.
This place is free, but donation is very welcome. There are a lot of donkeys. Also there are cats and dogs for adoption. Animals are amazing, very friendly, quiet and waiting for your love. Please adopt them if you have the chance.
